What to expect
When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the sister cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were frozen in time. More than 1,600 years passed before they were rediscovered, and today they're undoubtedly two of the world's greatest archaeological sites. Andrea, one of our expert local guides, says, "Pompeii and Herculaneum may have shared the same fate under the ashes of Mount Vesuvius, but they offer two distinct glimpses into ancient Roman life. While Pompeii was a bustling commercial centre, Herculaneum was a refined seaside retreat for the wealthy."Buried by volcanic debris, these UNESCO-listed sites offer a fascinating and at times haunting insight into ancient Roman life. First up, your guide will lead you through the streets of Pompeii and show you the richly decorated villas of the Roman upper classes as well as public spaces such as the Forum. See the remains of temples and villas and stroll along cobbled streets still rutted from Roman carts.Then, if you've booked the tour option that includes lunch, you'll enjoy a simple, authentic meal made with seasonal ingredients and a glass of regional wine, before heading to the archaeological site of Herculaneum. Andrea says, "walking through Pompeii is like stepping into a busy city of the past, with its grand public buildings and lively streets, while exploring Herculaneum feels like strolling through a luxurious private estate, with lavish villas and intricate mosaics, boat houses and marble floors." Following your guide through the ancient town, you'll learn about the tragic demise of Herculaneum, destroyed by a fast-moving pyroclastic flow of hot gas and volcanic mud. The itinerary for this experience is... - 7:30am to 8:30am – pick-up from your accommodation - 10:00am to 12:00pm – guided tour of Pompeii - 12:00pm to 1:30pm – lunch at a nearby restaurant (if tour option with lunch included is chosen)- 1:30pm to 2:00pm – bus transfer to Herculaneum - 2:00pm to 4:00pm – guided tour of Herculaneum - 4:00pm to 5:30pm – return to your accommodation Please note, the times and schedule may vary on the day. It all depends on when entrance ticket slots for the venues can be obtained.

What to remember
You can't take any bag larger than 30x30x15cm into Pompeii or Herculaneum – there's a free-of-charge cloakroom where you can leave belongings
Transport may be from a predetermined pick-up location
Groups for the visit to the archaeological sites will be a maximum of 35 guests, but transport to them may be in coaches holding more passengers
On the first Sunday of each month, entrance to the archaeological sites is free of charge – this has already been deducted from the price on the relevant dates
The official ticket price for Pompeii is €20 for adults, while Herculaneum tickets cost €16 for adults. EU citizens aged 18–25 can access both sites for just €2. Admission is free for children under 18, visitors with disabilities (plus one companion), and all guests on the first Sunday of each month. The price difference reflects the added value and exclusive services included in this experience

Bus on time. Guide informative, professional and friendly. At one point 2 other members of the group wandered off and got lost. I watched them and they were spending much time talking to each other and on their phones. Later they tried to blame Erica the guide for “leaving them”. They were obnoxious and rude. She spoke to them in a professional and friendly manner. I do hope they do not complain about her as it was their own fault. She was excellent as a guide. Lunch was delicious.

The guide Ionika was absolutely superb. She talked to us all for hours and everything she said was interesting and valuable. She was clear and easy to understand, friendly and to the point. The ear-piece tech worked beautifully for keeping us connected.

The tour was very fast paste the guide was far ahead leaving some of us far behind the group we also never got to spend much time looking at any of the places we were taken to to visit. The whole day was excellent. Our guide, Lou Lou, was amazing and her knowledge of the history of both sites was outstanding. She managed probably one of the busiest days of the year - keeping the group together with plenty of pitstops along the way. She was very personable and approachable which made it easy to ask her any questions - she also taught us a little Italian phrases along the way. Very happy and would highly recommend this experience. I hope that Lou Lou gets a promotion soon!!

Tour guide was excellent and knowledgeable. Felt lunch would have been better with just a very good main meal rather than an ok three course meal. Depending on group size and age it might mean you don’t cover as much ground in Pompeii as you would like. That’s fine as it makes you want to go back anyway. Herculaneum was simply excellent.

Although the transport was 20 mins late, our guide and driver were apologetic & very polite, Fabi our guide was very informative & interesting with lots of historic facts!, Pompii is huge and impossible for you to see in one morning, but we seen many highlights, Lunch was okay very simple with only 2 choices, but it was served quickly, as we needed to return to the coach for the second tour of Herculaneum, which was just as impressive and again Fabi was very good & informative,

Although you can do these sites independently and cheaper by taking the train, it has to be noted that the guides knowledge and flow of historic accounts brought the experience to life. The lunch was a tasteful three course affair, which was a pleasant surprise. Hats and suncream a must!! Good sturdy shoes to manage the cobbled roads is recommended.

Visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum were quite mind blowing experiences. Having an extremely knowledgeable and personable guide allowed us to get the most from such an amazing place. We may never get to see these places again, so it was important that we got the best experience possible - and we did! It was impossible to see the whole sites in one day alone, but we were shown some of the main highlights which we will remember always.

The experience, overall, was excellent, especially the quality of the guide: Francesca was extremely knowledgable, her English faultless and the provision of earphones worked very well. Lunch was perfect. Timing was excellent- a little more time in Pompeii to visit the shop as most were closed after the Herculeanuem visit. The idea of the two visits consecutively is excellent as they are so different. Maybe a bit pricey but a not to be missed experience, so worth the effort.

More time needed at Pompei and Herculaneum. Bus was 30 minutes late and traffic atrocious. Seat belts didn’t work and bus had dirty windows and curtains hanging down. Large price to pay for two hours at each site and 5 hours unsafe travel. Guide was very average.

Guide “Ralph” was extremely knowledgeable and helpful throughout the day. Disappointed not to have seen the large amphitheatre at Pompei having only been shown the smaller one on this tour. Lunch could have been shorter and perhaps just a sandwich/drink to allow more time at both Pompei and Herculaneum, other a must see!

I liked the size of the group. The head phones were not very comfortable. If you were at the back of the group you could miss what he was talking about and when you reached the spot he had moved on!! The guide was good but it all felt a little rushed! Would have liked more explanation into how the preservation of the site occurred. Lunch was good

We really enjoyed our trip, our guide was friendly and knowledgable and she was happy to answer any questions the group had. Lunch was good, 3 course vegetarian options with a soft drink or beer/wine included. The tables in the restaurant were very close together which made it feel cramped, difficult to get past others to go to the toilet etc, other than that we had a really good day.

Francesca, our guide was brilliant. You could tell she was passionate about the historical sites and her knowledge of the area was extensive. As the tour covers both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day, there isn’t much time to really see a lot of Pompeii (indeed Francesca told us you would need about three days to cover the site) but in our two short hours she managed to show us some interesting places and I was impressed at how she managed to keep a large group (32) of mixed mobility together..

Very informative guides, and enjoyed comparing Pompei with Herculaneum. A very full schedule but guides dealt with it all well. Lunch was very tasty, staff very polite. Headsets could be improved with a volume control as commentary was very loud. We asked for volume to be reduced and it was a bit, but not quite enough.

Overall we enjoyed the trip very much. There is a lot to see and take in and the lunch was very nice and a pleasant break in the day. I was pleased to have seen both places together. What would have been better would be a little time in the museum at Pompeii even 15 or 20 minutes would have allowed us to read some of the boards and maybe look in the shop without making much difference to the length of the trip. The guide was knowledgeable and good at working around other groups.

The trip itself was good and guide was very knowledgeable. However, when I got on the bus he said "you need to sit at the back , you are the only one on their own" . Yeah, I know that , I don't need to be reminded I thought. He could've been a bit more respectful. Really enjoyed the the ruins, digs, and findings and he was good at explaining. The meal was a disaster. Hence the lower score.

Even the torrential rain and thunder and lightening didn't stop us from enjoying the Pompeii tour! We were all soaked through but dried off in the afternoon fortunately. It was warm and sunny again in Herculaneum. The tour guides were fantastic and so knowledgeable about their obvious passion. Going to see the new dig at Pompeii was such a treat having watched programmes about it on tv. Shame we couldn't take photos. The meal was surprisingly very good and set us off for the afternoon visit.

Was good to get a snapshot of both sites & some food in one day. The guide was good-keeping us informed & giving the key information. The starter was good & also nice to get a beer included, however the main course of Aubergine pasta was poor quality, both the pasta & the aubergine. The cake for desert average. Fair enough a vegetable pasta, but the pasta needs to be better quality & vegetables too.

The sites were great, the tour guide was really good. However the 2 sites are a lot to do in 1 day. By the end of the day people were struggling to get around Herculaneum and many people sat down and waited for the guide to return from various areas. Our tour group were mainly in the 60+ age group, and in the heat many found it exhausting.

The tour of Pompeii was good and the guide provided interesting details. The latest section being excavated was particularly interesting and the walkway above the excavations provided a great way to see the details of the buildings. Lunch was terrible. The food was poor quality and poorly presented with very small portions. The restaurant staff wete rude and surly. Our guide seemed to have lost intetest by the time we got to Hercalaneum and seemed to be keen to get us back on the bus asap!
