What to expect

The remote Berber villages of Tunisia's Atlas Mountains are about as far away from modernity as you can get. On this tour, you'll be whisked away in an off-road vehicle into these highlands to visit the Roman ruins of Zaghouan and Uthina as well as the mountain village Zriba El Alya. Mohamed, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Zriba El Alya was deserted in the 1960s after the development of the new town in the plain. But four to five families still live here among the ruins, which now mostly serve as sheepfolds.'Your Atlas adventure begins at the little-visited Uthina, which is still being excavated by archaeologists. Admire the amphitheatre – up to 16,000 spectators watched gladiatorial combats – the magnificent mosaics unearthed in villas and more. The Roman theme continues at the Zaghouan Water Temple, site of an ancient sacred spring. Its location, fringed by pine trees at the foot of a mountain, gives an indication of just how revered it was by the ancients. We'll then drop into a Zaghouan eco-lodge set in beautiful gardens for a Tunisian pastry cookery demonstration and a typical lunch made from locally sourced ingredients. What's more, your visit contributes to the local community and economy. The day's final stop is the half-ruined Berber village of Zriba El Alya, which lies on a craggy ridge. It boasts superb views of Djebel Zaghouan, the fourth highest peak in Tunisia, and the coastline. Your guide will fill you in on the story behind its hard-to-reach location.

Great

We were stuck in the very back of 4 by 4 in a seat for children. I am a tall 68 year with recent hip surgery. It was Johns 70th birthday. The travel experience was uncomfortable and very painful, particularly getting in and out of vehicle. We had been led to believe we would be travelling in luxury. A bus would have been much more comfortable. Having said that the guide and driver were first class and helped us as best they could to get in and out of vehicule.

Poor

Great

Tour guide excellent. Informed us about various places of interest as we were driving to various sites. Interpreting was good. Did not spend too long in each place which was good. Considerate to what our interests were. Only negative was the lunch!

There was a great variety of interesting things to see and the whole day was organised to keep our interest and provide a wonderful impression of the Tunisian countryside. It was fascinating to walk through the medina in Zagouan

Great

Although it's one of the more expensive excursions avaliable on our holiday we did appreciate the fact it was practically our own transport for the duration. The transport was quality and fully air conditioned. This benefit could be told to potential customers before hand as price may out others off. All of the sites visited were good, especially the roman ruins at Uthina. The guide was great and had excellent command of the English language to share the history of the tour.

The schedule could be finished earlier rather to spend too much idle time during the trip. Compare with the other trips I joined, this was not quite worth for the money that I paid.

An amazing experience! If you’re into exploring ancient villages and buildings then you’ll love this! We saw temples, coliseums, an aqueduct and abandoned villages, and all this was made better as there were only five tourists to a tour. The guide was very knowledgable and went out of his way to make us feel secure. To top it all off we went to the peak of an Atlas mountain (you do have to climb) but the view was incredible. The word count isn’t enough to explain how great this excursion was!

The image for the excursion leads you to belive you will be in 4x4 vehicle driving through the Atlas Mountains. This is not the case, you visit a Roman settlement on the way to a water temple which is on the outskirts of the Atlas Mountains, then visit an olive press, again not in the AtlasMountains
