When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the sister cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were frozen in time. More than 1,600 years passed before they were rediscovered, and today they're undoubtedly two of the world's greatest archaeological sites. Andrea, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Pompeii and Herculaneum may have shared the same fate under the ashes of Mount Vesuvius, but they offer two distinct glimpses into ancient Roman life. While Pompeii was a bustling commercial centre, Herculaneum was a refined seaside retreat for the wealthy.'Buried by volcanic debris, these UNESCO-listed sites offer a fascinating and at times haunting insight into ancient Roman life. First up, your guide will lead you through the streets of Pompeii and show you the richly decorated villas of the Roman upper classes as well as public spaces such as the Forum. See the remains of temples and villas and stroll along cobbled streets still rutted from Roman carts.Then, after lunch, we'll head to the archaeological site of Herculaneum. Andrea says, ‘Walking through Pompeii is like stepping into a busy city of the past, with its grand public buildings and lively streets, while exploring Herculaneum feels like strolling through a luxurious private estate, with lavish villas and intricate mosaics, boat houses and marble floors.' Following your guide through the ancient town, you'll learn about the tragic demise of Herculaneum, destroyed by a fast-moving pyroclastic flow of hot gas and volcanic mud.

You can't take any bag larger than 30x30x15cm into Pompeii or Herculaneum – there's a free-of-charge cloakroom where you can leave belongings

Groups for the visit to the archaeological sites will be a maximum of 35 guests, but transport to them may be in coaches holding more passengers
On the first Sunday of each month, entrance to the archaeological sites is free of charge – this has already been deducted from the price on the relevant dates

I enjoyed the whole of the experience, it was really well run, Francesca was brilliant The only thing I didn’t like were the toilets on the sites, not TUI’s fault I know but you would think the Italian tourist board would provide something better considering the amount of tourists in and out of the sites

The experience, overall, was excellent, especially the quality of the guide: Francesca was extremely knowledgable, her English faultless and the provision of earphones worked very well. Lunch was perfect. Timing was excellent- a little more time in Pompeii to visit the shop as most were closed after the Herculeanuem visit. The idea of the two visits consecutively is excellent as they are so different. Maybe a bit pricey but a not to be missed experience, so worth the effort.

More time needed at Pompei and Herculaneum. Bus was 30 minutes late and traffic atrocious. Seat belts didn’t work and bus had dirty windows and curtains hanging down. Large price to pay for two hours at each site and 5 hours unsafe travel. Guide was very average.

Guide “Ralph” was extremely knowledgeable and helpful throughout the day. Disappointed not to have seen the large amphitheatre at Pompei having only been shown the smaller one on this tour. Lunch could have been shorter and perhaps just a sandwich/drink to allow more time at both Pompei and Herculaneum, other a must see!

It was an excellent day with an excellent experienced guide Dana. Everything was clearly explained including the programme for the day. Lunch was more than expected with 3 courses, water and wine. All in all a brilliant day…. And for October the weather was perfect.

I liked the size of the group. The head phones were not very comfortable. If you were at the back of the group you could miss what he was talking about and when you reached the spot he had moved on!! The guide was good but it all felt a little rushed! Would have liked more explanation into how the preservation of the site occurred. Lunch was good

We really enjoyed our trip, our guide was friendly and knowledgable and she was happy to answer any questions the group had. Lunch was good, 3 course vegetarian options with a soft drink or beer/wine included. The tables in the restaurant were very close together which made it feel cramped, difficult to get past others to go to the toilet etc, other than that we had a really good day.

Francesca, our guide was brilliant. You could tell she was passionate about the historical sites and her knowledge of the area was extensive. As the tour covers both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day, there isn’t much time to really see a lot of Pompeii (indeed Francesca told us you would need about three days to cover the site) but in our two short hours she managed to show us some interesting places and I was impressed at how she managed to keep a large group (32) of mixed mobility together..

Very informative guides, and enjoyed comparing Pompei with Herculaneum. A very full schedule but guides dealt with it all well. Lunch was very tasty, staff very polite. Headsets could be improved with a volume control as commentary was very loud. We asked for volume to be reduced and it was a bit, but not quite enough.

Overall we enjoyed the trip very much. There is a lot to see and take in and the lunch was very nice and a pleasant break in the day. I was pleased to have seen both places together. What would have been better would be a little time in the museum at Pompeii even 15 or 20 minutes would have allowed us to read some of the boards and maybe look in the shop without making much difference to the length of the trip. The guide was knowledgeable and good at working around other groups.

The trip itself was good and guide was very knowledgeable. However, when I got on the bus he said "you need to sit at the back , you are the only one on their own" . Yeah, I know that , I don't need to be reminded I thought. He could've been a bit more respectful. Really enjoyed the the ruins, digs, and findings and he was good at explaining. The meal was a disaster. Hence the lower score.

Even the torrential rain and thunder and lightening didn't stop us from enjoying the Pompeii tour! We were all soaked through but dried off in the afternoon fortunately. It was warm and sunny again in Herculaneum. The tour guides were fantastic and so knowledgeable about their obvious passion. Going to see the new dig at Pompeii was such a treat having watched programmes about it on tv. Shame we couldn't take photos. The meal was surprisingly very good and set us off for the afternoon visit.

Was good to get a snapshot of both sites & some food in one day. The guide was good-keeping us informed & giving the key information. The starter was good & also nice to get a beer included, however the main course of Aubergine pasta was poor quality, both the pasta & the aubergine. The cake for desert average. Fair enough a vegetable pasta, but the pasta needs to be better quality & vegetables too.

The sites were great, the tour guide was really good. However the 2 sites are a lot to do in 1 day. By the end of the day people were struggling to get around Herculaneum and many people sat down and waited for the guide to return from various areas. Our tour group were mainly in the 60+ age group, and in the heat many found it exhausting.

The tour of Pompeii was good and the guide provided interesting details. The latest section being excavated was particularly interesting and the walkway above the excavations provided a great way to see the details of the buildings. Lunch was terrible. The food was poor quality and poorly presented with very small portions. The restaurant staff wete rude and surly. Our guide seemed to have lost intetest by the time we got to Hercalaneum and seemed to be keen to get us back on the bus asap!

The roughly 1 hour pick up before setting off to the site was rather tiresome. But our tour guide Francesca kept us well informed and made the journey interesting and informative. The day we chose was 1st Sunday and Pompeii was extremely busy which made it tricky but she ensured all 35 of us had the best experience. Herculeum was a lot quieter and Annaleise took our group and was equally as enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Thank you to both.

The guide was great, so knowledgeable. There were a few people in our group who struggled a bit with mobility and the heat which made it slow going at times especially in Herculaneum. I would’ve liked to have seen the boat houses at the bottom where the people tried to hide. In our group some wouldn’t have got down there let alone back up again.

Visites très bien. Je trouve qu'avec la technologie actuelle, des traducteurs adaptés seraient nettement mieux.Tout le monde ne comprend oas l'anglais . J'ai déjà pu profiter d'un traducteur ( oreillette) en Espagne notamment. C'est quand même mieux. Surtout quand le guide nous propose de descendre voir les squelettes., ne nous accompagne pas et qu on n'a pas compris qu'il fallait tout remonter. Lunch basique, 10 accras pour 4(?), pas de pain. Sinon, Martina très bien.

Great trip, we picked the first Sunday of the month as it is free entry so this comes at a reduced price. However any other date we would have paid full adult price for our 14 year old son despite free entry to both sites for children. tui make no price reduction on this trip for teens despite the free entry. Very good guide, would have liked longer in Pompeii - it’s huge. Herculaneum is worth a visit. Lovely 3 course lunch and soft drink or beer, choice or pizza or pasta.

Pompeii wasnt that impressive but the guide Hugo took is around the Herculaneum which blew my mind! This was much smaller and more accessible and better preserved. The buses and extra transfers to our hotel were on time and we'll arranged. Guides were good. It felt like Pompeii would have worked better without a guide in some ways. The worst part was the food/meal. The quality wasn't that good in general. But also for my wife who is celiac, the gluten free options basically just meant less food!

Absolutely amazing day, our guide, Dana I think her name was. Probably not how you spell it but she was lovely, very knowledgeable and just generally upbeat and enthusiastic despite the absolutely scorching weather. Hugo, our guide at Herculaneum was also fantastic and you could tell he was passionate about what he was telling us about. The lunch was lovely and the air con was even lovelier. Our driver was brilliant got us there safely and him selling water was very convenient. Needed free time.

Loved the whole day. Guide was incredibly knowledgeable and shared so much information from start to finish as well as ensuring everything ran perfectly to time throughout the day. Lunch at Ristorante Tiberius, Pompeii was beautiful and served without any delay ensuring we were able to depart in time for the afternoon visit to Herculaneum. If I could change anything it would be the headsets, they weren’t the most comfortable and would fall off my ear if I looked up. Overall, a brilliant day.

Pick ups fine, minibus and driver fine. Guide excellent - funny and very informative. Lunch very poor. Staff surly, food average at best. Wife and I both had upset stomachs which we put down to the food served there.

The trip itself was really good and very well organised. The coach driver and tour guide were really good and looked after us. The time we spent in Pompeii and Herculaneum was really good, we were provided with a 3 course meal at a hotel local to Pompeii, the food and service was fantastic. The only thing I felt let down by was the price we paid… the TUi rep charged us 153 euros each, however on the App it was £101 each, which was considerable cheaper. I recommend booking via the app!

Enjoyed are day the only thing for the money just a choice on main meal on the lunch either pasta or pizza for instance

Great
It was a very long day and extremely busy with tour operators/tourists so slightly difficult in having to wait to see certain things but the tour itself was interesting and the guide informative but be prepared for 100s of people. Maybe more variety of gifts to buy to bring back home and at a reasonable price. Water stations could also be set up as it was so hot as you can only carry so many bottles!

We enjoyed the fact that the guide tailored the tour to take into account both sites and was extremely knowledgable about both sites - she was interesting and made the tour fun and informative. We really enjoyed the lunch and thought the location and food was great. We would definitely recommend this.

Fabi the guide was excellent. Restaurant lacked ambience snd felt like a market hall. Food was average. Coach comfortable and tour informative. Not suitable for anyone with a mobility issue. Was very tiring

The tour guide round each location was very good but we would have liked some free time to explore ourselves as well. The lunch was nice but not as good as other excursions. It was just a hotel function room rather than a nice restaurant as we have had before

We were looking forward to going back to Pompei and Herculaneum, but we were in Italy during a heatwave so decided that an archaeological dig wasn't the best place to be in 40 degree heat. We knew that we had left it too late to cancel and get a refund, but we were unable to cancel at all, and the tour guide still thought we would be attending. There should be some way to cancel even after the full refund period has passed.

Guides were amazing, knowledgeable and well organised. Lunch was miserable, appetiser looked like a mis match of food the restaurant had left, the main was much the same and the dessert was a piece of tasteless cake two bites big…….huge disappointment, it was so obvious that it had been the cheapest option they could provide despite the tour being quite expensive.

The rep was fantastic lots of information presented to us in a fun and entertaining way She persuaded the driver to drop us as close to our chosen hotels as possible instead of the communal pick up point. This was very much appreciated at the end of a long hot day
