One of the prettiest walks on the island
Walk through a prehistoric laurel forest
Spot endemic species of flora and fauna
Panoramic views of Porto da Cruz and Eagle's Rock

What to expect

Considered one of the prettiest levada walks in Madeira, the Ribeiro Frio hike will not disappoint. Starting in the northern hills of the island, you'll wind your way through the natural park, past mountains and laurel forests, rounding off in Porto da Cruz.Over 2,000km of aqueduct-like levadas criss-cross Madeira, delivering much-needed water to the dry south-west of the island, also doubling up as scenic walking trails. You'll join up with a professional guide who will navigate the way as you follow the path along the beautiful Ribeiro Frio levada. You'll come across magical laurel forests hiding tiny birds like chaffinches and Trocaz pigeons, and you might even glimpse the shine of trout beneath the flowing water. As for panoramas, you'll have a bird's-eye view of the parish of Porto da Cruz and Eagle's Rock far below. You'll have just under five hours of total peace and tranquillity among nature.

Excellent

Excellent walk on the levadas. Tour guide extremely knowledgeable. You can’t guarantee the weather, take warm jacket/waterproofs just in case. ‘Frio’ translates as ‘cold’!

I did a few Lavada walks and they are value for money with top guides. The only thing I would say is be very aware of your physical capabilities, the description does say not suitable for people with reduced mobility. The pathways are uneven, narrow walkways sometimes, uphill sometimes albeit a very slight gradient, people coming from the opposite direction.

Beautiful walk and scenery. Well organised. Lovely guide. Negative was cost of trip compared to what you can pay locally in resort.

The guide was excellent: informative and entertaining. The walk was a pleasure: quieter than other levada walks and very pretty.

This walk was changed due to landslides that occurred over a week ago. Why were we not informed of the change of walk in advance so that we could cancel and book an alternative walk? That said the walk company Madeira Explorers went above and beyond to get us on a suitable walk. Even sending our own personal minibus to take us back to the hotel.
