What to expect
Dive deep into the rich cultural heritage, maritime history and cider tradition of the Basque Country through a visit to the reconstructed 16th-century whaling ship, San Juan, and a tasting experience in a traditional cider house. The meeting point is in San Sebastián, from where you'll be accompanied by a guide/driver to Albaola. In the 16th century, Basque fishermen and sailors embarked on lengthy expeditions to Newfoundland in pursuit of whales and cod. Cider was their beverage of choice, with each sailor consuming no less than three litres daily. A significant portion of the cider produced in the region was supplied for these voyages. You'll have the opportunity to witness first-hand the reconstruction of the 16th-century whaling ship, San Juan, which met its fate in the icy Canadian waters. The ship's blueprints trace back to its origins, and it's set to sail once again to the Canadian waters it frequented centuries ago.Following this historical journey to the origins of the Basque cider culture, you'll visit a local cider house to savour various ciders and indulge in a traditional lunch menu.
