This expansive cave network, with its capacity to accommodate up to 50,000 individuals, served as a sanctuary for many residents of Maastricht during the Second World War.A fully equipped evacuation area was constructed beneath the surface, complete with electric lighting, a public address system, a bakery, lavatories, chapels, a small hospital, water pumps and numerous other facilities. Although these were never fully utilised, remnants of this subterranean city remain visible today.This journey offers a fascinating glimpse into a hidden chapter of history, etched in stone beneath the bustling streets of Maastricht.
