What to expect
Like something out of a fairytale, Motovun is the sort of town you might dream of eloping to. Alleys of stone houses laden with art galleries and cafés are packed either side of robust Venetian walls. But it's the chance to taste traditional liqueurs, oils and jams from a family distillery that marks this hilltop town firmly on Istria's must-visit list. Once you arrive, you'll begin with a walk through Motovun's stone-paved streets, checking out the historic sights. It's a Medieval monument in itself, perched high above the Mirna River valley, with stop-and-stare views over the vineyards and forest sprawling out below. Next, you'll spend a mouthwatering hour at the Aura distillery shop. The family have been producing goodies for over 30 years, hand-picking wild herbs and fruits from the slopes of the Ćićarija mountain and pristine Istrian landscapes.You'll have the chance to taste their natural products, from smooth brandies and liqueurs to fruity homemade jams. The nearby forests are a treasure trove of truffles, so you'll also be introduced to Istrian truffle oils for a taste of the local gastronomy. After this, there's time to wander the town for another 45-minutes, buying souvenirs, sipping coffees in the pavement cafes or getting lost in the alleyways, before hopping back on the bus to your hotel.

Tin, the guide, was outstanding. His local knowledge and passion to share was apparent and attention to details was excellent. This was a fantastic trip showing traditional and historical culture and architecture which was brought to life by the friendly and respectful guide. Thank you for a wonderful trip.

The guide was excellent and overall service can't be faulted, however we were only given 25 minutes to walk around Motovun, only just enough time for a quick coffee following walking around the walls for 10 minutes. Surely we should have been given approximately 90 minutes to get lunch, Hum was worse and only 10 minutes free time, this ruined our trip, we returned to our hotel approximately 15:30hrs and had no lunch so had to go then for something to eat, this meant our tea in hotel was affected

Overall, ratio of transit (from Medulin) to activity time was poor - only recommend this trip to folks staying much nearer Motovun. Bad stuff: total travel time & ratio of transit to time in interest area. Didn't have long enough in Motovun (e.g. for a decent look-around and browse after the guided part of tour) - felt a bit rushed. Could do with a bit longer in the distillery too. Good stuff: glad we visited Motovun (interesting hilltop walled town) - & distillery. Guide was v. positive

There was nit enough t8me in Motivon after the guided tour, it was either look around or drink/toilet, certainly not enough time to look in the church. Not sure why we couldn't have got the next shuttle. The Aura distillery was interesting, would have been nice to have had a light lunch there (I know that would increase cost of trip) but I think would have added to trip. Lovely going up into the hill country for a very different viewpoint than on the coast. Guide knowledgeable

We were met off the hotel boat by Nina the Rui rep. She was lovely and excited for us. We were introduced to Boban the tour guide who was lovely. A couple of stops en route to pick up other gusts and then off we went. Boban was extremely knowledgeable and informative throughout the entire trip. He would answer any questions we had and on one of the stops I had a chat with him. He loves doing the tours and sharing his knowledge to make the trips as good as they can be.

A good trip. Boban was a good guide, Motovun was beautiful and the trip to the distillery very enjoyable, with an abundance of free samples. My only reservation is that when we booked the (a week beforehand), it included truffle tasting at a farm, which had apparently been cancelled due to Sunday opening laws. We only found out by reading other reviews and subsequently speaking to our rep. Strangely, although it didn't happen, Boban still mention the truffle tasting in his introductory speech.

The tour was listed as a taste of Istria, we tasted alcohol and jam!. Famed for its truffles we didn't get to taste any, most shops being closed owing to a new law barring shops opening on Sundays apart from 16 times per year. We were told by the guide we could expect a tasting at the distillery but only jam and chocolate was on offer!.

Fantastic guide. A rather long day depending where your hotel is. Also on Sundays local shops might be closed as they can only open 16 Sundays a year, so watch out for that. Excellent views for most of the trip.

Va,our guide, was excellent and kept us informed and made the day fun. Motovun was picturesque and the countryside was stunning. The first stop to sample truffles was a little bit disappointing as only given tiny pieces of bread, some which was stale, to taste different products. The second stop at the Aura brewery was better presented with a quick tour with a guide. Sample tasting was much better presented.

Our guide, V, was exceptional. Really informative and approachable. Even when there was a traffic accident and the coach got stuck en-route to the distillery, she was an absolute legend, going out of her way to find out more information and keep us informed / ensure that we were all comfortable.

Het dorpje motovun was zeker de moeite waard. Echt heel historisch hoog in het gebergte. De truffelshop waar men allerlei konden proeven was minder interessant omdat de groep veel te groot was. Zeer leuk was wel de distilleerderij waar alles uitgelegd werd en iedereen mocht proeven met toastjes met jam.onderandere gin en brandy. Een aanrader!!!

We both thought this trip was great, the 3 places we visited were very interesting. I would have liked a little longer at the top of Motovun. We followed the guide then had a coffee in our own time, but after this we had to walk back down to meet shuttle so this felt a little rushed. We did have two guests who had some walking difficulties so this did delay us, meeting at the top of the hill under the arch. Spectacular views. Truffle tasting and distillery were great. So glad we did this trip.

We were recommended this trip by Jayne our rep and It was a wonderful day. We have small group Vladana was out guide and she did a fabulous job guiding us. Motovan is the first stop and the little village is a delight with narrow cobbled streets leading up to absolutely amazing views around the perimeter. If you like truffles then the 2nd stop will be heaven for you. Not my thing but pleasant none the less. Aura distillery give you the opportunity to try different liqueurs , brandy and gin. We spend more in this shop than anyway I think. Highly recommended trip particularly as it was so reasonably priced ????????

A brilliant tour, despite the weather. Motovun is a quant old town. Followed by truffle tasting, then onto a grappa distillery, plenty os samples tried, such a pity that we couldn't bring them all home.
Excursion was even better as only 4 of us so was more like a private tour.

Great guide, pretty location, better if you're nearer the destination at the start otherwise quite a long time on the coach. The village was pretty, the distillery a bit less interesting and really just a shopping stop.
