What to expect
The Mendelssohn House Museum is a tribute to the life and work of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The centrepiece of the museum is the historic Belétage, the composer's former first-floor apartment, which is the only one of his residences that has been preserved. As you explore, you'll discover the original music room and study where Mendelssohn once lived and worked.Venture up to the second floor to find exhibitions dedicated to Kurt Masur, the Gewandhauskapellmeister and founder of the museum, as well as Fanny Hensel, Mendelssohn's sister who was also a gifted but often overlooked composer. A standout feature of the museum is the Effektorium, a conducting room like no other. Here, you have the opportunity to delve into Mendelssohn's choral and orchestral culture and even try your hand at conducting. This immersive experience provides a deeper understanding of Mendelssohn's musical world.
