What to expect
Discover Matala, a secure natural harbour located 65 kilometres from Heraklion on the Bay of Messara, renowned for its gently curving sandy beach. This is where, according to legend, Zeus swam ashore in the guise of a bull with Europa on his back.Explore the beach that stretches over 250m in length and 45m in width. Despite becoming a favoured tourist spot, Matala still maintains the charm of a tranquil fishing village. Its roots trace back to the early 20th century, with echoes of the hippie lifestyle from the 60s and 70s still resonating today. Every June since 2011, the spirit of Matala's hippie history is revived during the three-day Matala Beach Festival. Half of the beach is bordered by tamarisk trees, drawing your gaze towards the striking sandstone rock cliffs and their renowned caves. These create one of the most distinctive beach landscapes on the island. The origins of these caves remain a mystery, though it's believed they were initially carved out as Roman or early Christian tombs. Further ruins can be found at the eastern end of the village, while ancient remnants are visible beneath the clear waters of Messara Bay. Matala is proud to be one of just over 400 beaches in Greece that have been awarded a Blue Flag. This prestigious eco-label is bestowed upon beaches that demonstrate cleanliness, provide safe bathing areas, and meet strict criteria related to water quality, environmental management, and safety.
