Legend has it that in the Mirna valley lived giants who each built a hilltop hamlet. And this tour takes you to two of them. Istria's green hills are a place of mythical beauty, and nowhere more so than in the fairytale villages of Grožnjan and Oprtalj. Ivana, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Grožnjan was suffering from depopulation in the middle of the 20th century, so artists and musicians were encouraged to come and use its empty houses as studios. Today, there are about 40 ateliers and a popular summer music festival. Adding to the cultural mix, both villages have strong Italian communities.'Your adventure begins with a scenic drive through Istria's hills to Grožnjan – the artists' colony straddling a ridge. Wander its cluster of lanes lined with handsome stone-built homes, looking out for ancient churches and palaces. If you like arty souvenirs, the many galleries and shops are a great place to browse for handmade gifts such as jewellery, prints, textiles and fine art. Plus, during the summer, the entire town transforms into an open-air stage for jazz and classical musicians.Next, it's time to take a break with a tasting of local Istrian delicacies, along with wine and olive oil at a typical tavern. Rounding off the day is a visit to peaceful Oprtalj. With a long history stretching back to Roman times, there's a clutch of historic buildings to admire, including the Venetian loggia and the 16th-century St George's church, located at the top of the hill overlooking the town. When you arrive at Oprtalj, your guide will show you around steep stone alleys boasting countryside views.

We really enjoyed the trip. Our guise was very knowledgeable and gave lots of info about the area. We would have liked a longer time at the first village Groznjan as we felt a little rushed and we could have taken more time to appreciate the village which is really picturesque. The food and wine tasting was good and a nice end to the trip. Overall a very enjoyable trip.

My husband and I decided on this particular trip because we thought it was okay for a more older couple. Besides us several other people on this trip found it difficult firstly walking down the very uneven path at the first village and secondly up a steep hill in the heat at the second village. The positive part of the trip was the wine/food tasting due to being made very welcome at the farm. Speaking to others on this trip I think the general feeling was at 80€'s per person this was too much

Excellent excursion to see Istrian villages, sample some typical Istrian food, learn more of the regions history and culture. Our guide, TIN, was so informative and made the whole trip enjoyable. Our driver, Daniel, was excellent. Fantastic day, would highly recommend.

While the hill top villages were worth visiting the excursion was not as informed. First, we would not have booked a coach journey of 1.5 hours each way, we were led to believe the journey would be 45 minutes. Second, the arts village was lovely but as a bank holiday many of the galleries were closed & should not have taken place on a bank holiday . We only had approx 1 hour there, so again travelling for 1 hour not good. Third the group was too large. Local wine tasting better than expected.

The guide was very knowledgeable but it was supposed to be a half day trip and we were advised we don’t need lunch but we left a 925 and returned at 430. There was a lot of travelling for a very short visit to 2 towns.

The food tasting was excellent. The guide was first off the bus and just set off with scant regard for the age or physical abilities of the group. My wife walks with a rollator walking frame so the steepness of the road up to the second was impossible. The first stop was too difficult a surface for my wife so we stopped at the cafe. His only concern was ghat we were back at the bus on time. He made a really interesting area as dull as ditchtwater by delivering a monotonediatribe of facts.

What a complete waste of time and money. The reason we went on this trip was to visit the artists in Groznjan and also to experience Istrian life in a typical village. What TUI didn’t tell us was that it was a national holiday, so the majority of galleries and other shops in Groznjan were closed. The second village (Oprtalj) started with a steep walk uphill for 400 metres, and the village itself was basically empty and derelict - complete waste of time visiting.

Duration at the villages is no where near long enough turning this trip into poor value for money when most of you experience is time spent on a bus with poor air conditioning. Why don’t you make this trip one villlage and the wine tasting ??? This trip makes no provision for lunch and allows no time for lunch, the snacks at the wine tasting are useless for vegetarians and vegans, not good when you are being given alcohol in hot weather. TUI, you need to completely re-think this trip.

Grozjan really worth a visit . The second town ( Opat….) is a waste of time , at least only go if the church is open ! Even the guide said “ we won’t stay long , there is nothing to see “ . Go back to your original tour and include Motovun instead …..

The locations visited were amazing with great scenery, cultural historical significance and interest. However, spending much longer traveling than actually visiting the locations felt quite rushed and made this trip not value for money. Whereas we knew there was no lunch provided, it would have been appropriate to allow time for a cafe visit or to have a picnic lunch from the hotel. Really disappointed in the customer experience and apparent lack of consideration for traveller basic needs.

Very nice day out with beautiful views. Guide very knowledgeable and the tasting at a local winery with wines, cheeses, hams, etc was lovely. Visited some beautiful places on the excursion and a lovely day out. Would highly recommend. Only downside was number of pickups in highway gas stations from other resorts which dragged on to the day

The three stops were good and worth visiting. However we left our hotel in Medulin at 9.30am, returned at 4.15pm and spent about two thirds of that time on the coach, partly as a result of picking up further tourists. Thought that the tour would have been unsuitable for those with limited mobility, although this was not mentioned when booking. Would also have been helpful if the guide had pointed out the location of available restrooms at the stops.

The first stop at Grosjnan was lovely but we only had a limited amount of time there before we headed off for lunch. The tasting experience was very enjoyable and it was great to have the chance to taste and buy the delicious, locally produced food and drink. Our final stop, although interesting was extremely brief and we only had twelve minutes of free time. Would have preferred two longer stops to avoid feeling rushed.

Obwohl unserer TUI Reisebetreuerin wusste, dass wir kein Englisch können, hat sie uns jeglichen Hinweis auf die Sprache diese Reise "angedreht". Wir haben erst im Bus bemerkt, dass der Guide ausschließlich Englisch spricht. Das hat natürlich den Informationsgehalt auf Null gesenkt. Des Weiteren stimmt mit 75€ pro Person das Preis- Leistungsverhältnis überhaupt nicht. Schade, das wir so einen negativen Eindruck von diesem Ausflug mitnehmen müssen, denn die Landschaft ist fantastisch.

Too much lost time picking up other guests from service stations/ car parks. It got ridiculous. Guide never stopped talking for first hour. Too much info to take in. We stopped in one village for just 10 mins before having to get back on the coach. A poor choice and not worth the money. Very disappointing.

Der Guide spricht perfekt deutsch. Während des Ausflugs wurde aber ausnahmslos englisch gesprochen da überwiegend Engländer teilnahmen. Es gibt auch technische Möglichkeiten, so dass jeder das Gesagte in seiner Sprache mitbekommt. Ich persönlich verstehe einiges auf englisch. Noch ältere Teilnehmer haben nie englisch in der Schule gelernt.

Seeing local scenery and villages and learning about the history of the area. The wine/food sampling gave us some new, enjoyable tastes of local produce. Our guide, Christina was excellent! She was informative, knowledgeable, friendly and presented the information clearley. Driver Eddie was also excellent negotiating the tricky narrow roads and bends..

The coach left us behind even though they knew we were on the way so our taxi had to 'chase' the coach and he wasn't happy (nor were we!). Finally got to the 1st stop and only had 45 mins to explore. 2nd stop wine tasting .wine was OK but food had been left uncovered and was infested with flies which the guide tried to encourage us to eat. Vile. 2nd village stop we were told we only had 10 mins to explore which was pointless. Very disappointing.

The pick-up arrangements were very efficient. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Enjoyed the visit to the winery and the wine tasting and snacks. The time in the villages was about right. My partner is quite deaf - some written information about the villages, a summary maybe, would be helpful for deaf/hard of hearing people.

The chosen villages were all worth visiting. The guide gave us enough of a historical perspective to help us understand why one was flourishing and another ailing. Boyan, our guide, was Istrian and a historian so the information felt both relatable and accurate. Above all he was a great communicator, fun and enthusiastic, not dry. The local tastings were enjoyable.

Whilst the organisation and the guide were excellent, the actual trip was very disappointing. Very little to see in both places and therefore not considered good value for money. The stop to taste wine and food was very good and the hosts were very kind and the wine delicious but the artist area was full of stuff we had seen in Rovinj - very little original art. The abandoned village stop had people living in it and was not really worth a stop.

We loved seeing and hearing about the two hilltop towns we visited. It was interesting seeing the differences between them but we would have liked a bit more free time to explore Groznjan. The art shops and narrow streets were so lovely we could have easily spent at least another hour there. The wine tasting was really relaxed and enjoyable too.

Groznjan was het eerste dorp wat wij bezochten en dat was werkelijk fantastisch! Alsof je je in een schilderij bevond. Het dorpje wat we daarna bezochten stelde weinig tot niks voor. Had geen meerwaarde! Twee straatje en een hoop geklets van de guide. De wijnproeverij was matig/ slecht. Vliegen op de hapjes die erbij waren. We hebben 3 wijnen geproefd alle in hetzelfde glas. (Vreemd) het was smoezelig.

The rep was really good. We were in Pula & we stopped at three other hotels on the way. Basically it took us 3 hours to get there & then we had a really short time actually in the villages. The wine place was good, we bought some wine but when we tried it later it dud not taste the same as those we tried- very different & actually horrible.

Just back from Istrian Hilltop tour, really good trip.Our guide Tin was excellent throughout, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Daniel the coach driver gave us no concerns on smaller winding roads. Overall a good trip, 2 lovely villages visited and wine / food tasting was not just a welcome break but showed off great produce from a local farm. Many thanks Tin.

This is is great way to explore some of Istria with a very knowledgeable guide. There is time to explore on your own as well at the two stop offs en route to the venue for the tasting experience. The tasting was beautifully done with plenty of delicious foods and drinks to try. Wear sensible shoes. The streets in Groznjan especially are very uneven. Definitely not a place for flip flops or heels.

We joined at Pula which meant we were on the bus for 2hrs and 10 minutes before reaching the first destination were we had 1hr (not long enough to look round and get a drink) the second stop was not worth it and we had 20 minutes.

Would have preferred more time there as the 2nd village experience was a waste of time, nothing was open due to it being too early in the season, it was a little short sighted to know this, but still visit when more time could have been spent in the 1st one. The vineyard visited was very interesting. But overall loved the day out, the knowledge of the tour guide was very engaging 'Christina'. The views and the countryside are breathtaking ??

Pick up must be at Hotel. More in formation about villages for people with mobility problems so a choice can be made whether to go or not. Food and wine experience excellent.

Perfect tour, really enjoyed it and the guide Tin was fantastic, so friendly and professional, really made the trip. Maybe little longer at first stop so had time for both a coffee and to look in artist shops, maybe 30 minutes more. Other than that perfect, tasting stop with family was excellent

We would have preferred to have been picked up and dropped off at our hotel rather than walk to the bus stop as my husband has poor mobility. Guests at other hotels on the way were picked up at their hotels. Our guide Boban was excellent and we enjoyed the villages and the tastings experience very much.

The streets were stoney and parts were quite step for several of the group of approx 22 . Nobody was told of this when booking . No fliers in the hotel had the approx length ( in hrs) of the of each excursion, only half or full days.

The trip was excellent and the guide knowledgeable. The two villages were extremely nice, but we would have liked a little more free time to explore the shops and market place, especially in Groznjan which was beautiful and needed to be explored. The tasting was good value and the chance to taste local food and wine was great. Considering the travel time to the first stop and the equally long journey back this should be extended to a full day to allow time to explor the wonderful villages.

This tour did not turn out as expected. But, the weather did not help. We had to wade through rivers of water to get to the pick up location. The trip was explained as the Guide would walk you around cobbled streets in the locations. There was no lunch. Only dry bread with some bits of cheese and salami at the wine tasting. We were on and off the bus continually. Most of the time at either end of the trip was picking up/dropping off. Trip should state challenging for those with mobility issues.

Weather conditions could have been better, torrential rain from start to finish. Not everyone came prepared including ourselves, but the driver gave me his own umbrella, wonderful gesture. The places we visited and the tour guides words made up for the weather. To finish this excursion with a visit to a family run winery was icing on the cake.

Too much sitting on a mini-bus and then a coach. Guide was so boring, and the places visited were disappointing. Waste of money. Most of the TUI trips are the same, drive all over the place going nowhere.

Bus komt een half uur te laat. Bij het oude dorp zou de bus om 1 uur komen dat werd over half 2. Bij de wijn proeverij stond iets te eten op tafel, dat was voor je er erg in had op.

Overall the trip was good but was not suitable for people with walking difficulties which should have been pointed out. Also spent 5 hours travelling in coach including multiple pickups and drop-offs. Would not have gone if we'd been told this and other guests said the same

It is not a half day it took 2 and a half hours to pick us all up in different locations I now u want to get your money's worth but it was a bit extreme !! We got picked up at 9 we did not get back till 6 that is not a half day .the tour guide got picked up at another location so we did not know what was going on .

Not happy at having to go off course 3 times to pick up people from laybys along the motorway and 1 person being they guide. The tge smell in reverse on our return meaning the coach driver was in charge part journey. Too long at the truffle tasting which was hard to taste due to too many people in shop. Unable to understand guide, guide started to discuss things before people got to him so missed info. Not impressed.

I adored Groznjan which was enchanting, and also liked Oprtali. As a non drinker the wine was not for me, but they did provide some food and a glass of water. Would probably still have preferred to combine the two villages with Motovun and had time for a proper lunch, and skipped the tastings. I'm surprised you don't do a trip to the castles at Pazin or Svetvincenet (the later only reachable by pricy taxi) - that would be real value added.
