Breathe in the scent of sea salt and espresso on your visit to the historic island town of Gallipoli. Your private transfer will pick you up at around 9.00am and in less than an hour you'll be over the bridge and into the winding streets of the old town, where bunting and laundry criss‑cross the balconies above you. You'll have until around 1.00pm to roam Gallipoli, which literally means ‘beautiful city', with plenty of evidence to back up the claim. You can visit Castello Angioino Aragonese, the castle that guards the entrance to the old town and you'll find dozens of churches, including the grand Cathedral of Sant'Agata, inside the city walls. Plus, try Gallipoli's signature dish, scapece gallipolina – locally caught fish, lightly fried with vinegar and saffron – best enjoyed by the town's sandy beach.
