This history fest kicks off in style with a visit to Pompeii. You can still see the remains of the town, much of it more or less unchanged 2,000 years after it was buried under volcanic ash. After a guided tour and a light lunch, you'll then visit the summit of Mount Vesuvius. Alessio, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘On 24 August in 79AD, Vesuvius blew its top and covered Pompeii in ash and pumice. Accounts from the time say that the volcano had been showing signs of an imminent eruption for a few days, and fortunately many people had already evacuated the area.'Because Pompeii remained buried in ash for so many centuries, you can still see the remarkable ruins of temples, villas and streets, seemingly frozen in time. It's one vast archaeological site, and new discoveries are still being made today. Alessio adds, ‘Pompeii is a site that evolves from month to month. Even for a guide like me, there's often something new to discover as parts of the site are opened or newly excavated.'After a light lunch, you'll head up Vesuvius. As for the fiery mountain itself, this one's up alongside Krakatoa in the notoriety stakes – it's the only active volcano on mainland Europe, though the last eruption was in 1944. As you can imagine, the views from the top over the Bay of Naples and the city are phenomenal. Alessio says, ‘Some 600,000 people live near Mount Vesuvius, me included – it might seem a risky place to live but, for everyone's safety, the volcano is constantly monitored.'

The trip was great. The guide Vicenzo was brilliant, made the trip very interesting and fun. Our guide in pompei, Orlana was great, brought it to life. Philippe the driver was friendly and drove amazingly on the windy roads. Lunch was ok. Nice restaurant. The group all sit together which is fine with us but wasn’t to everyone’s liking. Enjoyed the walk up Vesuvius. Worth the effort for the view at the top. A good day out.

Despite an exceptionally rainy day our guide, Salvatore, made the whole experience exceptional. His tour around Pompeii, despite the crowds was very informative. The lunch provided was excellent and the walk up Vesuvius was memorable.

Dana, our guide and Filippo (so!) our driver were great. Because of the crowds I wonder if it might be helpful to have a high level marker/mascot for the guide to carry to make her easy to spot from a distance. Also, perhaps we could all wear a sticker to identify each other as part of the same tour group because with the number of tourists it is easy to lose the guide in the crowds. Just a thought. Thoroughly enjoyed the tours. The bad weather is out of anyone's hands unfortunately.

Een bijzonder vriendelijke gids, Anna, deed met passie de rondleiding in Pompeï. Zij nam onze grote groep enthousiast mee in de tijd van toen -->10/10 voor Anna. Jammer dat de tijd te kort was, we zagen amper 1/4 van het hele gebied Pompeï. We hadden ook graag het amfitheater gezien, maar dat is niet meer gelukt. We zijn blij dat we ook tot de top van de Vesuvius gestapt zijn. Indrukwekkend. Minpuntje: in het restaurant was het eten lekker, maar we moesten veel e lang wachten! = tijdverlies!!

Our guide Desire (I think that is how you spell it) was so knowledgeable and friendly and was always on hand to answer any questions that we had. We booked this trip as we wanted to visit both Pompeii and Vesuvius on the same day and I had no expectations for our lunch but it was lovely. The restaurant was near the bottom of Vesuvius and the staff were so warm and welcoming, the food was delicious and the free wine was a delight

The content of the experience was very interesting and informative. The guide was clearly spoken and sloke English well. The only thing I would have liked to be included was at Pompeii. It would have been interesting to see where they are unearthing new parts of the town but I realise this is probably out of your control.

Guide around Pompei was too detailed. Took far too long to give us micro information and then asking if people had questions. With only 2 hours on site we wastes 30mins amd it was disappointing to see so little. Lunch was nice but we had to wait 40mins for any food. Time better spent at Pompei to have some free time. Vesuvius was spectacular. All travel was good and not too lengthy.

2 hour pomeii part didn't see much at all. Maybe because it was a busy Sunday. But the entrance we used was just seeing 2 kitchens, baths and a court yard. The lunch took 1hour and 30mins. 1 hour waiting. Then eventually made it to Mount Vesuvius at 2.35pm. But the tour guide said be back down at 4pm. It takes 30mins up and 30mins down. Felt like we had 10-15mins on top. I wouldn't recommend this package. I would recommend 2 days seperate for both areas. At least then you can do more in pomeii

The bus was late so had a knock on effect for the rest of the day.There was no time for refreshments at Pompeii. Our guide Johnny was fantastic but not enough time. The food and staff at the restaurant were fantastic. again it felt rushed and we nearly left someone behind. Again Vesuvius felt rushed and no time for refreshment. There were 2 TUI bussed for the same excretion and 1 couple got on the wrong bus. It was a good trip just a shame everything felt rushed.

I cannot find fault with this trip, a punctual pick-up, Fabia the tour guide was ‘Fab’, informative and humorous, certainly knows her stuff, not only in relation to Pompeii and Vesuvius, but the general history of places we passed en route to our destinations. Lunch was superb, more so as we were expecting a packed lunch and not the delicious Italian 3 courses in a restaurant with stunning views overlooking Naples. Highly recommend this trip.

We thoroughly enjoyed the experience overall. The trek up Mount Versuvius was tiring but worth it for the views at the top. The visit to Pompei was spoilt by the weather as we had torrential thunderstorms and extremely heavy rain the whole time which made it difficult to concentrate on the tour guide as we were so wet but that is out of anyone's control. The stop for lunch was lovely, good food and wine and the tasting of the various products at the shop was very nice and we did buy a few items.

Timings were good, the overall game experience was a great one. Fab was absolutely brilliant. We had torrential rain in Pompeii and my jacket was soaked through, Fab was kind enough to lend me her jacket for the second half of the trip.

The guide Fabi and driver Louigi were both very good and considerate to get us the fastest access in to Pompeii and a convenient pick up from Vesuvius. Fabi had excellent English and was very informative. We also went to a great stop off for lunch which was 3 courses with a local wine. We also met a Limoncello producer which was great fun with lovely free tastings.

This trip was very good value. The guides, Salvatori and Roberto were both knowledgeable and had a good sense of humour, helping to add to our enjoyment. The bus driver, Ciro, did a great job on winding roads and very heavy traffic.

We really enjoyed the tour and our guide Cynthia was wonderful, funny, knowledgable and knew all the little secrets to avoiding the crowds in Pompeii. The tour was very well organised and we enjoyed the lunch stop. Our only complaint would be that our hotel didn’t accommodate our early start and “ early continental breakfast” consisted of cold coffee and a few morsels of dry cake so we were quite hungry for the start of the tour until Cynthia took us to a cafe.

We had the most wonderful guide Fabianna (sorry, I know that probably isn’t the correct spelling). She skilfully managed the day from start to finish with her lovely wit, humour and fountain of knowledge. We enjoyed the tour of Pompeii. It was well constructed by our guide to show us the essential highlights with additional intricate details. Lunch was delightful. Hiking Vesuvius was challenging but oh so satisfying . I didn’t like the 30mins hanging about before queuing to get into Pompeii.

Guide Vincenzo was very knowledgable, helpful and good company. Local lunch was poor value; 3 tiny morsels for a starter, pizza was large but wet in the middle (nowhere near the quality of pizza we had elsewhere in Sorrento). A glass of wine would have been nice.

Pompei is a huge site and whilst our tour lasted approx 2 hours we would have liked to see other aspects including current excavations. The lunch, at a busy local restaurant, was better than we anticipated. The visit to Vesuvius was the cream on the cake. Although the base area has very poor facilities, the climb up to the crater is difficult but well worth the effort and rewards the the tired legs and sweat soaked clothing. Take plenty of water!

May be worth informing people in advance that their pick up vehicle may not be the tour bus. We had no idea we were being picked up to be taken to a central hub. The guide’s knowledge and personality was outstanding (Vincenzo). I personally learned a lot.

Group of 36 far to big We spent hour & half before we left sorrento due to the number of pick ups it took us hour &40 minutes to reach our destination meaning we had been on the coach for over 3 hours! Longer than travel to Italy! Lunch was inedible, eldente is ok but uncooked pasta is vile, everybody on our table that had the dish couldn’t eat the meal, restaurant absolutely packed we were herded into a small room, boiling hot without ventilation staff so busy imp to complain Guide fabulous

The guide was super friendly and knowledgeable, timings efficiently kept to, local lunch was one of the best meals we had. Vesuvius was spectacular of course! My only negative was the balance of time spent in Pompeii. We spent ages around the little streets which was interesting, but the final area, the grand square, where Apollos Temple was we literally wizzed through! In my opinion that was the most amazing buildings were, 25 minutes there would have been perfect!

Would have been good to know there was a delay due to fire so section of road was closed on way to Pompeii. Would have been good to be told beforehand where the toilets were where we could get water and definitely over a certain age you would find the use of trekking poles vital as I did as we looked up other web sites

Just the right amount of time spent at Pompeii 2 hours was enough for us to see all the important bits. However if you’re really into the history of it this may not be enough for you. Lunch was very good and the last stop at Vesuvius gave more than enough time to walk up and back to coach. Carmela our guide was very knowledgeable. We thought the day was great and good value for money.

Great trip with excellent guide Vincenzo who was so informative and passionate about his local area and its history. Great lunch and tour of Pompeii followed by walk up Vesuvius which was moderate in difficulty but definitely worth the views. Vincenzo was very friendly, kind and patient and ensured our safety at all times. Excellent experience!

We both really enjoyed the trip our guide Cynthia was amazing, knowledgeable, funny & friendly. Our coach driver was lovely too. Just enough time at both places, Mount Vesuvius was hard climb in the heat as it was like walking in sand but well worth the effort. Lunch was I. Loved the experience. Just the right balance of activities. Pompeii was fascinating. Tour guide Salvatore, was entertaining and knowledgeable. Lunch was also lovely. Going to the top of Vesuvius felt like an achievement and we're glad we did it, but the volcano itself seemed less dramatic than I was expecting.

What a fantastic excursion! Dana and Mena were brilliant. Thank you, ladies. You were so knowledgeable and made our experience really special. Very enjoyable trip. Guide Roberto around Pompeii showed lots of notable places, and gave time to look and take pictures. Plenty of time to see mount vesuvios at your own pace. Lunch at the restaurant was delicious 3 course meal!

At first I felt like the price was a bit too high per person but this tour is a whole day with a rented bus and a delicious lunch. I liked everything about it, our guide was informative and funny (at times) which definitely added to the experience. Overall, it was a great day out and I don’t regret !

Enjoyed having a knowledgeable guide who was fun and friendly. Coach was comfortable but our seat belts didn't work. Good food at restaurant but would have preferred our own table. We were sqeezed into a small space sat with strangers. Pompeii and Vesuvius didn't disappoint at all. Pleased to have the guide for Pompeii and to have the freedom to walk alone up to vesuvius. A really great day.

Excellent knowledgeable guide (Carmela) provided context on way to pompeii and then a great walking tour of the main sites. Nice lunch in cafe half way up Vesuvius and then dropped at the parking point on the volcano with plenty of time to walk up to the crater to marvel at the geology and enjoy view.

The tour itself was amazing, we couldn't fault anything, the guide (Salvatore) was great and he had a good knowledge of the two attractions. The only downside was the pick-up and drop-off location (Hotel Moon Valley). It seemed there was no understanding between TUI and the hotel regarding this. The man on the front desk was very angry about the drop-off and most unhelpful to us. This was especially disappointing after a long, hot day out and felt we were left stranded.

Pick up and drop off 10 minutes walk from hotel. We’re were last to be picked up and got the last 2 seats on coach and it meant my granddaughter and myself were unable to sit next to each other from Sorrento to Pompeii. On the way back we were again the last to be dropped off after the coach made detours to hotels in other towns around Sorrento adding 45 minutes on to our journey.. The cost of the trip was also much more than advertised on the Tui website. I’d advise people not to go with Tui.

Superb knowledge of Pompeii by Dana with snippets you certainly wouldn't get from a guide book / audio guide.Giovanni safely got us to Vesuvius so we could hike up the last bit to the top. Go steady, take your time and it's about 30 mins. Trainers needed. Only reason tour hasn't been given full marks was the lunch. Not great - cold and hard pasta - but pizzas looked great. Overall great trip! ??

Desire was a fantastic guide and considerate to all members of the group. Ciro was a great bus driver along some winding roads. Pompeii was fascinating as the volcano was great if a little hot!

Guide was great and very knowledgeable, it felt like he was telling us a story while wondering the streets of Pompi. Lunch was lovely and service also good. Mount Vesuvius walk was hard going up but worth it. Great day out, worth every penny. Thanks to our fantastic driver who did a great job. Only negative is there can be a long time before toilet vasilities-so something to bear in mind + having some small change to pay for using them.

Excellent trip. Our guide, Desiree, was superb and showed us all of the highlights of Pompeii - she was extremely knowledgable but also had a lovely manner and we very much enjoyed her guided tour. Lunch was great and we enjoyed having free time to explore Vesuvius at our leisure. Thank you for a fantastic day!

Pompeii tour just the right length with plenty of different parts of the site included. Knowledgeable guide. Using earpieces meant the guide could be heard easily. Lunch was reasonable although the venue was spoilt by the number of bees at the tables. The staff tried to divert the bees by putting out plates of dessert; but I think we should have been moved inside. The climb to thr crater of Vesuvius is not easy with some steep sections, but we'll worth the effort.

Our tour guide was brilliant. Very knowledgeable and able to give the information in a fun and entertaining way. The driver was very good and managed easily the challenging road up mount Vesuvius. The climb up to the top was as about 25 minutes. I found it hard going but worth the amazing view.

From pickup that was prompt to the drive to Pompeii was excellent. The lady tour guide was fantastic very informative. The restaurant was also very good and a surprise visit to the small lemoncella store where he makes his own concoction was an added great experience with the tasting having brought many bottles lol . The visit to Vesuvius was scary how the bus driver gets a coach round those tight bends is mind boggling. Vesuvius was very hot and a long walk . But worth losing weight for ?? ??

Lunch included was great. Tour guide was brilliant. Pompeii was huge but amazing to see the history. Mount Vesuvius was very good. Not if you cant walk and find it difficult to climb rough paths. Views from the top breath-taking. Only negative was the fact the coach ride was 4 hours worth of exhaust fumes in the coach. Air con did not shift it.

Being frog marched round Pompeii as if on a mission to beat any previous times the only time we stopped was the queue outside the brothel. Then it was take picture and move. Didn't get to really see anything. Having done this tour 13 years ago really disappointed in how its deteriorated. It would be great to combine with a trip to the Naples museum which was fantastic. Much better than this trip.

The guide Cynthia was fantastic from start to finish, extremely knowledgeable on both tours and even helping guests cross the road back at their hotels. Chirro the coach driver was superbly careful and confident. Lunch wasn't so great for me but friendly manager and staff.

The guide Dana was fantastic. She was very knowledgeable and gave lots of info. Had lots of time in each area. Lunch was good and the stop off at the shop for limoncello tasting was good. Would definately recommend for anyone wanting to visit pompeii and versuvius.

The tour itself was great, Dana our guide around pompeii was very knowledgeable and explained everything we saw well. The lunch provided was nice but not to the same standard as the lunch on the Amalfi Coast Gems trip which was outstanding. We really enjoyed this trip but you have to be fairly fit as its a lot of walking in the heat and the mountain climb isn't easy.

Guides were both very knowledgeable and helped us get the most out of Pompeii within the time. Tours were expensive but much easier than arranging. We paid for the convenience of having the day fully organised.
