Was zu erwarten ist

Prepare for an adventure that takes in Tunisia's Roman roots and pirate past. You'll visit an amphitheatre to rival that of Rome with a tour of El Jem – an ancient colosseum where gladiator games once took place. Then, take to the waves for a swashbuckling afternoon at sea that includes swim stops, lunch and snacks aboard a replica pirate galley. This UNESCO World-Heritage site of El Jem is soaked in history. You'll be captivated by its stone-cut walls, fine-tuned archways and three-floor facade, a testament of glory to what was the Roman Empire. Take a seat in the age-old stadium and admire the arena below, just like they did in times gone by.Then, we'll cast off from Monastir harbour into the Mediterranean, just as the Barbary pirates did for centuries. But while they struck fear into European coastal communities as far afield as Iceland, we'll be going out to have wholehearted fun. There'll be stops to dive into the sea for swimming and plenty of time to dry off on-board while chillin' with water drinks and munching on snacks.

Excellent

Great mix for adults and children- 16,14 and 8. The tour guide was very knowledgable. The bus driver was considerate and drove safely. The pirate ship was great fun, the food was lovely and everyone enjoyed jumping off the ship into the sea. The dancing was really fun. Lots of coach time but it was worth it.

Unfortunately we went on one of the last boat tours of the season. There was no vibe at all and to be honest I was expecting some fun . We have been on similar in Turkey and even when quiet there is a pirate show etc

Pirate boat was really disappointing, the only thing piratey about it was the shape of the boat. ‘Entertainment’ was cringey and involved the crew doing the standard holiday dances, which no one really got involved with (this is a no alcohol trip & I think a few drinks may have changed participation - not an excuse, just an observation). Been on a few of the ‘pirate’ cruises and they’ve all been really good fun, with the crew doing an actual show (comedy), swords etc so was expecting the same

Great

Safety wise, no safety belts in our minibus. The timing of the day was not that well explained, it was a good day but a long day. The gladiators part was interesting, but a long way to travel 1hour 40 mins to get there. The pirate boat was brilliant, the staff on board worked really hard to entertain, which they did do in spades and would highly recommend it. Again journey back was quite long at 1hour 30. Timing was not explained well

I enjoyed the tour a lot. Was such a hot day and everyone ran out of water and it was warm. My only suggestion would be maybe a cool box of water taken on the trip to give to people after the gladiator tour

Poor

We were told this trip was 4-8 hours when in fact we were out of the hotel for 11. 8 hours of which was sat on a coach with no toilet facilities for. The tour of the colosseum was only 1 hour but it felt like no time to look around at all. The food on the ship wasn't too bad but most of the 2 hours we spent on board was sat in the dock eating. We were also told that there was 2; swimming stops but only stopped once and barely had time to get life jackets on the kids before we were told to getout

The Colliseum was interesting but could have done with another 30 minutes- it was all a bit rushed! The actual sailing part of the Pirate ship and the swimming off it were great. However, felt very mislead when we were told that you get 3 hours on the Pirste ship- this was true…. Unfortunately 90 minutes of it were on the dock where they fed us a pretty average lunch and we waited around for something to happen! The drives were much longer than expected too meaning lots of time on the bus!

Poor

First off the tour guide and bus driver were great very professional and helpful. Gladiators section great but unfortunately not long enough to explore.. Pirate boat awful, no entrainment for the kids. Loud music with broken speaker. Only sailed for 10 minutes then had to swim in loads of jellyfish. Sat anchored for over an hour with nothing to do. Food was fine and one small cup of water provided for the whole trip. Boat staff pushy and they over filled the boat with random people.

Booked the 4-8 hour trip. It was nearly 12 hours. After a 2.5-hour drive, we only had 1 hour at the colosseum. After the ten-minute walk each way from the bus to the Eljem, toilet stop. We only had 30 minutes at Eljem. A race round, a clock watch photo stop. Then driven to a free Roman museu. That time could have been used in the colosseum. Another 1.5 hr drive to the pirate boat. Lunch 8 hours after collection. 1 cup water and anchored 2.5 hours by shore. No cruise or entertainment. Awful trip.

The pirate boat was not good at all. Very badly organised on board. The swimming spot they chose had hundreds of jellyfish and mainly the crew seemed to be the people swimming. The lunch was not served for 2 hours after getting on board (now 4pm) and we had not eaten since before our 7 am departure. When served it was not good. The ship did not take us to see anything interesting, and just seemed more bothered about getting further money from the guests.

The trip to El Jem Colosseum and Museum was great. The guide was informative and catered for English as well as French and German. The disappointment was with the Pirate cruise. This is more a trip out from the harbour, turn around and anchor for a swim stop not stops as in literature. We were given a plastic cup of water and lunch was served at 3:30pm! The music on board was staff taste! Overselling of poor quality photography and then a request for tips! Over an hour late return. Overall poor!

We were scammed on this tour. We were advised we would be on the big boat when sold to us, with food options on the pirate ship. The guide Omar advised a change of port last minute when on the bus and said itnis better then the original bookeWe were on a fishing boat with make up to look like a pirate ship. The show was described by my 8 and 10 year old as a horror show and spent the time on my phone. The food was one option and terrible. With 9 in our party, the only good part was the coliseum.

Great

The guide was very informative we learned alot about tunisia. It was a really great experience at the collaseum, having access to all areas was brilliant. The pirate ship was very good, only gripe was in the excursion details it does say you get soft drinks but only water was provided, my husband doesn't like water so I was thankful that I took a bottle of drink with us. There was alot of travelling involved, thankfully the bus had air-conditioning. We really enjoyed the day.

The tour spent first part visiting Roman colessuem, this was amazing! Sadly our time here was limited to an hour, which really wasn’t long enough to explore esp as there were local sellers out the outside selling beautiful goods which we never got time to look at. When this the sellers livelihood I’d have loved to buy something and support them. The pirate ship was laughable, felt like The Apprentice task! Tour guide really informative and interesting

Great

Pirate and Gladiators excursion overall a positive experience - Soft drinks are NOT included as indicated, you can get water aboard the boat for free but nothing more. - included lunch was good, good portion and nice food - upon arriving at the boat, the first thing naturally to do would be to go up the steps onto the top deck. Dont do this as there is a man aboard with a bird of prey who will demand money for photos. Make sure you take water from your hotel prior to departure

Gladiators: This was brilliant and a real highlight for my boys and I (aged 9, 10 and 15). Getting there early is perfect as it’s very very hot by 10am! El Jem itself is spectacular and a must see. The mosaic museum was interesting. Pirates: The boat itself is impressive but this experience was poor. The food was terrible, our drinks was water shared between guests out of one big bottle and the entertainment was naff plus they want tips. It was quick too. Our tour guide was amazing 5 *

I really enjoyed the coach journey as the guide was 10/10 informative. The amphitheatre was picturesque and we spent a lovely hour there. I didn’t, personally, enjoy the pirate not trip. We were lucky to be one of the first on and get some shade at the back of the top deck but most people were either in no shade upstairs or stuck downstairs where they couldn’t see any of the entertainment. Between entertainment there was ridiculously loud, very sweary inappropriate language for kids on board

Guide tried to hurry us through the Gladiator experience to go to a mosaic ‘museum’, which was not part of the original itinerary. Guide wasn’t available during the Coliseum visit and so we couldn’t ask any questions. Having provided info on gluten free diet ahead of the day, and checked twice with Tui reps my diet was not catered for. Food in general was very poor. Drinks on board were not included as advertised and very expensive. Whole pirate experience was lack lustre but the swimming good.

Great

The tour guide was wonderful, interesting tour of the colosseum and the mosaic museum. The boat trip was fun. Please adjust your description of the tour though as this was very inaccurate; the mosaic museum was not mentioned at all in the description and the description stated soft drinks were included-they were not.Only receiving 2 small plastic cups of water in an entire day out was incredibly dangerous especially for children. We found the sea swimming irratating on the skin with boat petrol.

Great

The ratings above are for El Jem. The pirate ship is not worth the money. It was disappointing that it sailed only a short distance to one stop, stayed there for a period of time and then sailed back. The shows on the ship were entertaining, but those who were asked to get involved were all young attractive women, whereas the target audience for a pirate ship surely should be children?! I booked on the trip for my 8 year old son, but it wasn’t something he would want to do again.

The amphitheatre is beautiful. I'd have liked more time there - we got 45 minutes to see one of the most incredible sites. The visit to see the mosaics in the museum was also amazing (and a nice surprise as it wasnt listed on the itinerary), but again there wasn't enough time to do them justice, or to see othe amazing house of Africa. The pirate boat trip was brilliant - along with the normal tour out, the crew put on a show that we all enjoyed, and I would definitely go again.

Fantastic to see El Jem. Mohammed the guide was kind and gave a lot of information about Tunisia. The day was longer than expected. Almost 10 hours! The pirate boat was too long, especially with a long coach ride to get there. A little too much travel time. But El Jem is 2 hours but 30 minutes going around hotel pick ups and dropouts adds an extra hour. Pirate boat experience can be done in an hour and not 2 and a half.

It was an excellent tour, guide very imformative and easy to have a conversation with. The visit to the mosaic museum was interesting but I personally think if travelling with young children then either more tine at the ampitheatre or onboard the boat would be of more interest.
