South Tyrol is the most un-Italian part of Italy. It's not just the Alpine location that sets it apart but its languages, architecture and culture. This excursion mixes the best of both worlds with time in the regional capital, Bolzano, and scenery-rich train ride through the Renon plateau. Martin, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The railway was first opened in 1907, and originally incorporated a cog section ascending 1000 metres from Bolzano, but in 1966 that section was replaced by the original cablecar.'Bolzano, or Bozen as German-speaking locals call it, is the elegant and prosperous capital of South Tyrol. Its star attraction is the Archaeological Museum, home to Ötzi the Iceman – a naturally mummified 5,300-year-old Copper Age shepherd. You can choose to visit the museum during your free time in the city – entrance not included – or you can stroll the handsome streets and piazzas of the city, browse the shops or try some local specialities like apple strudel.And on the next leg of the trip, you'll hop into a cable car in Bolzano and ascend to the Renon plateau in a matter of minutes. Then it's time for the narrow-gauge train journey though pastoral landscapes and pretty villages. A 20-minute walk away through nature are the plateau's famous earth pyramids – well worth checking out. These bizarre pillars can reach heights of up to 30 metres, and while one pyramid vanishes, further up the same slope, nature is already forming a new one.

Way, way to long on the coach just getting to Balzono. The stop here seemed pointless, it was just shops. The cable car ride was excellent offering great views across the countryside. The train ride however was just like being on a commuter train in rush hour. No seats and views of people's armpits! All in all a waste of money and wouldn't recommend this trip to anyone.

Some beautiful scenery however it was spoilt by the tour guide who constantly repeated the same information. The walk from the bus to Bolzano town and return was awful, the guide just walked too quickly for 50 people in. Busy town to keep up. The cable car and train ride were absolutely crammed and so much so that we could not enjoy the scenery at all on the train....it felt dangerously overcrowded. Did enjoy the earth pyramids, the scenery around there was beautiful.

This experience had its good points, but bad points too. Firstly, the guide was excellent, especially having to work with a group of over 50 people which was just too much. The bus trip along the lakeside was excellent as it was a clear day. Bolzano is a pretty mundane city, not much to see other than the ice man, but not enough time for that. The 20 minute cable ride to Rhenon was spectacular. The train ride was far too busy, standing room only. The pyramids were excellent. A 6/10 trip.

Very scenic trip worth every penny but a long day. The guide was very knowledgeable. The cable car was quite an experience and the train trip was relaxing. It does get busy depending on how many tour groups arrive at the same time but our guide was fantastic at getting our group on with most getting a seat. The views of the south tyrol were fabulous

The Guide staff made the day with her explanation of the areas we drove through and the people who live there. My wife and I enjoyed the cable car ride and train ride up to the plato. It’s was a long day and if a make a comment would be the pick up of passages at the north of the lake made the homeward journey long back to Bardolino especially as it was during rush hour.

The Guide and coach driver were excellent. I felt the trip was far too long at nearly 12 hours. Going to look at the mud columns and have 1 hour 30 mins there was a waste. We would of preferred to have a little more time in Bolzano and after the Train ride head home, so you got back about 4pm instead of 7pm.

A fabulous day with the most amazing scenery. However, there were some challenges which did impact on the trip for everyone. TUI need to make alterations to their descriptions of the day to include activity levels and the mobility required. An elderly lady walking extremely slowly using a frame made it extremely difficult for everyone. The whole group was left on the train, the guide and lady were behind because she could get on the train, not what we paid for.

Everything ran on time. The guide was extremely knowledgeable on the area. Kept us on track and got us where we needed to be at the set times. The coach was of a high standard and air conditioned. The rest breaks each way was a good touch. You sold water on the coach it would have been an extra revenue for you to sell a few more choices of drinks on board. The tickets for the trip with pick up didn’t include a Google map link to the collection point as mentioned in the app which others do.

Bolzano was a real surprise - I loved it. Our guide, Rosella(?) was wonderful - very informative and unflappable. One problem - unforeseen delays meant we were around an hour late to the restaurant, so lunch was at 3pm, and I ran out of time to see the pyramids - a real shame. Rosella fixed the weather; the bus was comfortable. Happy days!

The trip was great and one reason we booked was to see the iceman. It was only when we arrived in Bolzano we were told we might not have time due to queues for tickets. As it happened we were able to get in quickly but we would have been very disappointed if this was not the case. Could the tickets be purchased in advance to prevent this

Rep was rushing everyone said no maps as closed no seeing shepherd museum closed people asked if they could go around with her she said no way I do not need to spend the day wil all of u. Not really suitable if u have mobility issues I did check with rep who said would be OK not sure if she is aware of where they park you.fortunately we had an excellent driver took us as close as possible We were all pushed onto the train that was v full to begin not told where to get off it. The coach was late. In Bolzano we were encouraged to pay extra to visit the museum which was a waste of time and money. Bolzano is not as picturesque as Riva so not worth the visit. The cable car was the highlight of the trip but there was nothing to see or do at Renon and no views to speak of. The so called panoramic train ride down involved standing in a packed train while it travelled down a tree lined track with no panoramic views. We stopped at a restaurant where the guide sat. Our guide was so knowledgeable about the area. It was like a history lesson for adults- we learnt so much about the area. The tour ran to time and when connections were made for the cable car ride and train there was not a lot of waiting around. The guide was also strategic in getting everyone home safely and within good time. He organised transfers for some of the guests to make sure the coach did not get caught in traffic. He also ensured people had water on board the coach as the heat rise!

Guide was very good and knowledgeable. Bolzano was very good. The cable car ride was good. The Renon red train was poor as most of us had to stand for the journey and saw very little. The lunch and view of the 'pyramids' was fairly average. I understand the issues of managing the driver's time but 90 minutes of hanging about in a poor restaurant was not very enjoyable. Lunch should be in Bolzano. Also the day was over 12 hours long from pick up to set down - too long.

We left Bolzano a few little late but but not much and the guide Katia said we woukd have missed the train she wanted us to be on. As a result we were crammed on the next train. We all barely fitted on and were spread among various carriages to fit on. Me & my family all stood, squashed like sardines unable to admire the view. To be honest it wasn't a very pleasant journey, was unable to see anything not near my family and squashed. Someone fainted and started throwing up which made it worse

We were lucky on making good time to the honey and wine tasting so we stopped off at a beautiful lake along the way. The honey tasting was great and we learnt alot about the bees. Our tour guide was very friendly and helpful. We then made out way to lake Molveno where we took the optional cable car trip up the mountains. The lake is beautiful from up above and we highly recommend doing this. We had a pleasant journey stopping off to taste grappa on the way home. A enjoyable day.

Sat in a pub garden for two hours then travelled home no time to enjoy time at the top of cable car. Taken straight to train which was full with no seats left when we could have got the next train and enjoyed the scenery at the top. Never checked if all guest were on the train it was to full to tell.

Positive. Lovely tour guide . Very good driver as the roads are quite narrow. Bolzano beautiful place and cable car / train ride well worth the 3 hour drive from Bardolino taking in the fantastic scenery on route . It was a 12 hour day but loved the amazing scenery up in the Dolomites . Negative. We walked 30 minutes to be picked up by the coach then passed our hotel . We had to laugh .

Very long day with over 3 hours on coach to return to our resort. Ice man attraction in Bolzano closed on Monday so why run tour? Hard to understand guide due to her accent. Bit chaotic getting on train after cable car having to stand whole journey on train. Scenery nice but that’s only good point.

Very disappointed no train ride, not a trip to run in such bad weather. The cable car ride would have been spectacular but thick rain and clouds meant we saw nothing, also applied to drive from Riva to Belzano. wanted to cancel but found the ‘Ai’ service not useful and would have preferred direct contact with rep. The train ride was cancelled and we only found out after standing in the cold rain for 20 mins. and that was after being very wet from walking around Belzano. We hope compensated

Firstly, there was no hotel pickup as promised so had to walk a mile in the pouring rain. Secondly we went up the cable car waited a bit then found out the train wasn't running so had to wait another 30mins for the coach to collect us. It was foul weather, someone tshould have checked before leaving us to stand out in the pouring rain. Walked to the pyramids and rocks were coming off the hillside onto the footpath. It said over 8hrs it was 12, it should have been cancelled.

Unfortunately due to the bad weather, the train was cancelled due to a land-slip (obviously beyond the control of Tui). It was such a shame because on a lovely clear day, the cable car trip & everything else would have been wonderful. Top marks for Tui though - the following day we saw our rep - Jakob - & without any mention, he sent us a refund to compensate for the trip - even though it wasn’t anything to do with Tui - now that’s what I call service. Trip would be 10 if weather better.

We never got to do this trip because the pick up point has not been properly explained to us , there was no map to help us did the correct location to be picked up, ourselves and another couple has been left high and dry. I contacted the rep Caitlin who has promised us a refund of 136 pound. If we do not hear soon I will be taking this further

Views amazing from cable car but prymids a little disappointing. Stop for lunch was almost a given you were going to purchase a meal as no drinks menu or prices given. Option to sit and eat your own lunch not provided especially as we were having our evening meal at the hotel and didn't want two meals in one day.

The views from the cable car and train ride were outstanding. The free time we had in Bolzano was very short only a couple of hours, definitely not enough time to wonder off and explore the wonderful city Bolzano. The only time we spent in Renon was 15mins while we were waiting for our train ride. The railway station was very nice but it would of been lovely to see a little more of Renon. After the cable car and train ride we were taken to a small village for lunch with only one restaurant.

It was a great trip. Unfortunately the weather was very bad but one can't help that. I don't blame TUI. We both enjoyed it. The guide was very good, she informed us all along the way. The only bit I was annoyed with, is our pick up in Bolzano. She wasn't very clear about whete om the square to meet but we survived.

The cable car and train ride was enjoyable but 11.5 hours on a bus for an hour at most doing this was too much. Then we were taken to the stone pyramid to a restaurant in the middle of nowhere with no choice of restaurants. We would have had a snack in belzano if we had known but had to have a meal as no choice. If you are staying in Garda DO NOT do this trip

enjoyed very much. Wished it had been explained that the cable car and train rides were one-way only as we were planning to get better seats and take photos on return journeys. No one realised that it was one-way until we saw the coach at the end. Would have liked more time at the end of cable car or the station instead of at the village where we did stop for 2 hours. Not many lunch opportunities there.

Beautiful tour we loved both places and our guide had given us some great tips, we visited the museum to see Otiz the 5300 man found on top of the mountain which was fascinating. We enjoyed the cable car ride up the mountain with spectacular views. Our guide had fabulous knowledge and we had time to enjoy our trip, it wasn’t rushed.

The tour was excellent, the guide was very knowledgeable. It was a long day but not too long to be annoying and there was bathroom breaks so all was well. I will say the train ride wasn't what I expected, the train was so full and I guess I was expecting awesome views, they were few and far between because of the trees, so it was a little disappointing. I appreciate it's not really a tourist train so no big deal.

The tour is a great combo of city with the tour of Bolzano and nature with the quick cable car and train ride through Renon. The clay pyramids and the meal at the little restaurant there are a great add on. The archaeological museum is a must and still leaves plenty of time to explore Bolzano. Our guide was incredibly lovely and knowledgeable and really made our day the best it could be!

The coach, guide and info were excellent but the train ride was like being on the London underground, very overcrowded to the point of being dangerous

The best thing about the experience was being able to visit the museum of the iceman at bolenzo. However time management of the experience was quite poor . It would have been appreciated to have had more time at bozenzo been able to see more of the town. The cable car experience was also poor as we were packed in as a whole coach load to one cable car very squeezed up . Also the same with the scenic train packed in so we were not able to see any of the surrounding area. Didn’t see any of Renon

The train was too crowded and seemed pointless as we didn't have a seat, having to stand and unable to admire the scenery. Less time needed in Bolzano

The trip was too long from Bardolino, it was 12 hours from me leaving my hotel to my return, yet your advert said 4 to 8 hours. One hour in the town would have been enough. Yes scenery cable car and train ride was ok but a long way to go for just that. I can see the cost was about right from Bardolino , but was expensive from Riva

Excellent, knowledgeable guide. Enjoyed all of the trip especially the cable car and rail journey. It was well organised while leaving us plenty of opportunity to spend time as we wanted. Good balance between time in the city of Bolzano and the Renon plateau. It was a very long day but well worth it.
